Cairo, Arabic Al-Qhirah (“The Victorious”), Egyptian capital and one of Africa’s largest cities. Cairo has stood on the banks of the Nile for over 1,000 years, primarily on the eastern shore, about 500 miles (800 km) downstream from the Aswan High Dam. Cairo, located in the country’s northeast, is the gateway to the Nile delta, where the lower Nile divides into the Rosetta and Damietta branches.
